New Design! I’m prioritizing accessibility with an improved website theme

I’m attending the 2025 Catholic Writers Guild Online Conference, which has inspired me to revamp my professional website.

It seems like every year this conference makes me take a deep look at my brand and how I’m sharing my projects. Last year, I focused on creating a page for my writing projects and designing CTAs for my homepage.

This year, I took a look at my site and realized it looked the same as it did in 2016 when I first made this site.

Choosing a new theme

I browsed through a lot of different themes.

After much thought, I ended up choosing this theme because it:

  • Has a minimalist look
  • Allows for more flexibility with my menu
  • Allows me to have my pages at 2/3 width, which is more accessible

It’s a work in progress

As I explore this new theme, I’ll be making a lot of changes and testing out new features. So don’t be surprised if you see something weird!

I’ll be going through all my pages to focus on accessibility:

  • Making sure not to include language like “to the left,” which would be difficult for screenreaders
  • Reviewing my writing to ensure I’m using plain language
  • Adding metadata/alt tags to images, so they can be read by screenreaders

Wish me luck on this new creative experience! It will be awesome practice as I enhance my WordPress skills.
